Moleskine: New Doodles Collection @ Target

Moleskine just announced today a new collection called Doodles. They will be launching exclusively at ®Target. Similar to their partnership with Barnes & Noble, ®Target now has a slice of the ever expanding "moleskine-pie".

All corporate bickering and "the man" speeches aside, this is a smart business move for Moleskine. @Target is gigantic untapped source for Moleskine expansion. We shall see what happens.

Honestly, they really aren't anything new. But it's just a fresh look and way for Moleskine to break into this new area/market.

From the press release today:

"Moleskine presents a new collection of notebooks launching exclusively at Target.

The collection includes ten notebooks from the Moleskine classic collection, accented with a colorful embossed covers and matching paper bands that celebrate one of three themes: Creativity, Memories, or Daily Life.

I'm a sucker, so I'm gonna buy them, regardless of how others feel about their relationship with @Target (i.e. "selling-out", etc).

I just picked up a Verizon iPhone 4 (and it's awesome), but before that I had a Palm Pre for a year. I think it worked pretty well, though it was slow (probably a hardware issue?). But I enjoyed the user interface, all the gestural movements, and the Facebook integration to name a few.

With the imminent advent of these new HP WebOS devices, I think it will encourage folks to take a strong 1st or 2nd look at WebOS.

The HP TouchPad will especially gather attention as the tablet market is pretty hot right now.

It looks like the HP Veer is replacing the Palm Pixi from early 2010. It seems to have a bit larger screen than the Pixi, and it has a vertical slide out keyboard.

The HP Pre3 seems to be a revamped Palm Pre (2). The screen looks the same and the hardware looks identical. The biggest rework for most of these devices is the new and improved WebOS 2.0 Hopefully it is worth it!

I must say though, if HP wants to see WebOS achieve new heights they must get it on some NEW smartphones, not revamped old hardware. The HP TouchPad was an excellent step in the right direction! But it isn't as common of a consumer item as the smartphones.

I hope these devices do well. I really do want to see WebOS succeed as an alternative to Android an iOS. But, time will tell.

Gear Test: Columbia Bugatech Lite Omni-Heat Boots

It has been a delight to test out these stellar boots by Columbia.

These Bugatech’s are remarkably light. I noticed their lean design the moment I picked up the package from my door step.

I paired the Columbia Bugatech^TM Lite Omni-Heat® boots with my 24” TSL “High-Road” snowshoes. The Bugatech’s locked into my TSL snowshoes like they were made for each other. As I tromped around in my snowshoes, they felt like an extension of my foot.

The Bugatech’s lean and efficient construction made it a joy to snowshoe for 2 hours, even in uber-deep snow. Their lightweight design minimized fatigue and clumsiness.

We have over 2.5 feet of snow on the ground here in Fargo, North Dakota. I was able to get out and snowshoe in a wooded park near our home (Island Park). I tromped through 24”+ of fresh powder for about 2 hours. It was all trail cutting so I was pretty tired; I was sinking up to my knees with almost every step. It was a beautiful day, clear and crisp at about 10˚F.

The warmth of the Omni-Heat® technology and the 200g Thinsulate® is impressive. I was in knee deep powder for 2+ hours with a 10˚F air temperature, and my feet were warm and dry the entire time.

The waterproof technology was also superb, there was not a fleck of dampness on my sock or foot during the hike or afterward.

Size:

I feel the fit is true to size. These Bugatech’s were nice and snug with a good thick sock; I felt no slippage in the heel or any rubbing anywhere.

Fit & Feel:

The boots felt stiff enough to support the ankle and arch, but not too stiff that they were uncomfortable over a longer period of time. Even when I walked over more rough and uneven terrain the boots offered solid stability and control.

General Wear:

The Bugatech’s are great even for just wearing around town, shoveling the drive, or running errands, etc. Again, the comfort and lightweight design make them ideal for active snowshoeing or just wearing around town. The boots feel and fit like quality hiking boots made for snow!

I highly recommend these boots to anyone looking for a lightweight, capable, and versatile boot that can go anywhere and master the elements, whether that be slugging through 2 feet of powder in subzero temperatures or beating the chill while shoveling the driveway.

Just in case you were ever wondering what would happen if you ever put a Moleskine through the laundry cycle, let me enlighten you (see photo, exhibit A.)
This WAS a Moleskine Extra Small Volant notebook, until it got the thrashing of its life as it whirled through the washer's spin cycle at a modest 75MPH. Oh yea, and then it got dried, probably on high.

10 Things You Need for Fall Backpacking - EMS

THE BASICS

1. Packs
With a warmer sleeping bag and extra clothing, it's a good bet that you'll need to carry 25% more weight than you would in summer. Leave your daypack in your gear closet and choose a full-size internal frame backpack that's 3500 cubic inches or larger. And make sure it has external compartments where you can keep snacks, pack covers, and an extra layer within easy reach.

2. Sleeping Bags
Typically a sleeping bag rated between 0°F and 20°F will keep you warm and comfortable. An ultralight 40°F sleeping bag just won't cut it this time of year. If your body tends to run cold, you may also want to think about slipping your sleeping bag inside a bivy sack or an overbag. This adds to your bag's comfort range and keeps it drier, especially if you're sharing your tent with, say, an always-wet Siberian husky.

3. Sleeping Pads
You can have the warmest, loftiest sleeping bag in the world, but try using it in October without a foam sleeping pad underneath, and you'll end up doing jumping jacks all night to stay warm. Sleeping pads protect you from the cold ground, and as a rule, the thicker the sleeping pad, the warmer you'll be. However, keeping the weight to a minimum is pretty important too, so go with a self-inflating open-cell pad between 1 and 1½ inches thick. Also, forget the half-length pads. In colder weather, the mattress should be about as long as you are.

4. Tents
Most 3-season tents work fine in the fall. You aren't quite to the point where a heavier winter tent is necessary, but as the temperature drops, condensation becomes more of a concern. Choosing a tent with partial mesh panels and with vents built into the rainfly will ensure optimal airflow and help you avoid a rude (and frosty) awakening.

5. Gloves and Hats
Depending on the weather report, choose light gloves and a hat. Either synthetic or wool is fine. You'll also be very happy to have a warm cap around camp as things cool down. If it's really cold, keep the hat on when you sleep. A thin balaclava liner is another good option. It protects the neck and face when rolled down, and can be worn as a simple hat when rolled up.

6. Headlamps
As the days shorten, it's easy to misjudge the hike and arrive at your campsite after sunset, so be sure to include a lightweight headlamp among your light sources. Because cold weather saps batteries, a spare set is an extremely good idea.

7. Footwear
You probably don't need insulated boots yet, but for added warmth, wear slightly thicker socks. Wool or partial wool is a great choice, as it insulates even when wet. Also take along multiple pairs of socks and put on a dry pair as soon as you set up camp. To get a cold morning off to a warm start, keep some dry socks plus your shoes' footbeds in the sleeping bag with you at night.

LAYERING
A moisture-managing base layer, a warm insulating layer, and a weatherproof shell are the three components of the classic layering system. In the unpredictable weather of fall, layering allows you to bulk up in the cold and then strip down as you warm up.

8. Base Layer
Summer is over, so leave the cotton tee back in your car. A thin T-shirt made of polyester or merino wool will wick sweat away from your skin and onward to the outer layers. Both short and long sleeves work. You will probably use this as your only top layer when the sun is highest.

9. Midlayer
Because autumn weather doesn't call for a bulletproof winter parka, consider a soft shell jacket. Resistant to wind and water, the versatile soft shell is designed for aerobic activities and can be worn as the outer layer or under a waterproof shell for extra warmth. A lightweight fleece or midweight merino wool top is also a good choice. If wicked cold weather is a possibility, pack along a down sweater/jacket. Good for an emergency, you can also break it out on cold evenings.

10. Waterproof, Breathable Shell
If you stay dry, you stay warm. Or at least warmer. As the temperature drops toward freezing, the last thing you want is to be completely soaked and 20 miles from the trailhead. Go with a proven waterproof material like System Three or Gore-Tex. The shell can be noninsulated or lightly insulated. One with underarm zippers is best, as it allows you to vent heat and moisture.

"1: Face your fears
Identify the photographic technique you’re least confident about and resolve to master it. For example, if your camera’s advanced flash modes fill you with fear, try spending just 15 or 20 minutes each day practising how to use them. This way you’ll be able to build up your confidence bit by bit, without becoming overwhelmed.

2: It’s all about you
Don’t get too hung up on equipment. Yes, it’s nice to have the best brands and the hottest technology, but ultimately a camera is just a device that captures and records light. You are the visionary. Only you make it happen.

3: Get it right in-camera
Always push yourself to achieve the perfect shot in-camera. A few extra minutes spent in the field tweaking exposures, fitting filters or refining compositions is always preferable to relying on Photoshop to bail you out. Software never produces such satisfying results."

How I use my Moleskine notebooks

I almost always have this Mini Moleskine Volant in my pocket (as you can see it is beat up a bit). I primarily use it to write down and memorize Bible verses; but sometimes I will also jot quick notes in it. One of the things I like a lot about it is that the 2nd half of pages are perforated. This is often helpful to jot down contact info or other stuff to give to someone randomly or spontaneously, almost like a custom business card.

This Large Squared Hardcover notebook is my daily workhorse. I usually go through one of these about every 8 months or so.

As you can see, I will sometimes paste things into it. I use it primarily as a daily journal or diary for thoughts, prayers, ideas, and meditations (often from my daily Bible reading). But I will also pick up scraps of paper, business cards, flyers, 1/4 cards, etc and paste them in and write about them. It sometimes becomes almost like a mobile scrapbook, or a traveling journal/diary.

This is one I came up with a few months ago. I picked up this 2010 pocket Moleskine planner/diary + notebook last year. I loved the size, but I found that the notebook page next to each week (on the opposite page) wasn't enough room for writing all of my to-do's and notes.

So I decided to attach a Moleskine Cahier to the cover of the Planner for extra room for taking notes & to-do's etc. I thought about gluing it, but paper clips seemed the smartest, quickest, and most temporary decision for the time being. I thought if I filled that Cahier up, then I could just paperclip in another one. This Cahier happens to be a pocket plain buff version. And it still fit great in my back pocket.

This is a hack that I had seen several places around online over the last year. I took at squared pocket softcover Moleskine notebook and divided it into 5 or 6 sections using different colored sticky notes. I used each section for a different purpose (i.e. notes, to-do's, ideas, drawings, etc). I filled it up in about 6 or 7 months. I carried it everywhere with me as a BPN (back pocket notebook). I found the softcover was ideal for sitting on as opposed to the hardcover. Sometimes I would paperclip in blank 3x5 cards for jotting notes on to pass off to others for various reasons.

Backcountry Skiing/Snowboarding in Central NY

My buddy and I decided to finally get out and do some backcountry skiing/boarding like we had talked about for so long. We had our eye on this spot in the Finger Lakes National Forest for some time, but never got around to it. We finally hit it up. Check out the Google Map below:

Unfortunately, since it was so late in the season & it was so warm, the snow was really wet and heavy. So that made for a slow decent. We couldn't even hit up the glades because we couldn't get up the speed to continue the decent. So we ended up snowshoeing up a road closed for the winter and then riding back down.

It wasn't the best, but at least we had a good experience.

Side note: I just wish I was back in Vermont during the 2007 Valentines Day Massacre! I had the extreme privilege of riding after that storm in B olton Valley in VT. It isn't the best resort, but the shear amount of snow made it so wicked gnarly you couldn't even imagine complaining!

Lowe Alpine, Fall Line 35(L) (I think this is a discontinued model now)

I picked this up on Backcountry.com for a song in 2009. Sweet deal. I use it everyday to go to campus for work, but it really thrives on the trail. It performed well on this trip. I used the diagonal ski carry method this time around, it worked like a charm. I was free to snowshoe without the skis hitting the backs of my legs. The load didn't shift, and it was evenly distributed. Plus the attach and release system is simple, secure, and slick. This is a stellar pack all around. Love it.

Bladder - 70oz Camelback

Skis

K2, Fugitives 169cm

I purchased this pair of K2 Fugitives (soft, buttery, twin-tipped, park/powder) skis 3 winters ago. They were $680 retail, I picked them up on Backcountry.com for $140 (80% off!). Sick. They are great for powder, especially in the glades.

Bindings

Look (aka Dynastar), NX 11 +

These have been great bindings. Safe, secure, great weight & strength transfer to the ski & edge. I had them mounted just behind center on my K2 Fugitives to adjust for ideal powder conditions. Hopefully I can get back into some powder regularly someday!

Boots - Dalbello (too old to matter, I got them in high-school)

Poles - Scott (too old to matter, I got them in high-school)

Snowshoes

TSL, Take the High Road 25" (The graphics on mine are a little different)

I picked these up in the fall at about $60 per pair. It was such an outrageous deal. My wife and I had been talking about getting snowshoes for a while. This was the perfect time. These have great stainless steel spikes, a quick and simple binding system that fits my Columbia boots (see below) perfectly, and an all around rugged construction. These have held up great (and I haven't be easy on them). I look forward to many more hikes in them.

Jacket

Cabela's, Gortex Paclite Shell (mine is older and in red)

This is a great lightweight shell. It is breathable, no frills, no thrills. It sheds the water & the snow, and holds in the heat. No questions asked. Boom.

Pants - EMS System Three (they are great)

Gloves - Burton (too old to matter, I got them in high-school)

Goggles

Spy, Targa II (the coloring on my pair is slightly different)

Great goggles. I have had mine since senior year of high-school, and they still work and look great. They rarely ever fog unless I am overheating in an extreme way. Nothing to complain about. Sweet ocular protection.

Helmet

Smith, Holt (this is the closest to what the graphics look like, brown matte, etc)

Great helmet. Comfortable, warm, stylish, touch, etc. I haven't cracked my head on anything yet (to really test it), but it has taken it's fair share of beatings in the woods of Vermont.

Snowshoeing In Central New York

My wife and I went snowshoeing 3 times this winter in Shindagin Hollow, here in Central New York. Check out my previous post from mountain biking there last fall a few times.

The first few times were in mid January when we had a few nice powder storms. The snow clung to everything. We were tromping through at least 18".

The last time was in late January when the snow was a bit wetter, but still deep and thick. We hiked for at least 3 miles. The snow was around 3' deep.

I prefer snowshoeing over cross-country skiing mostly because of the "off-road" factor. I can go anywhere on snowshoes. Cross-country skis are not that versatile. On snowshoes, I can tromp down a trial, head into the glades, hike up a ridge/cliff, easily traverse hills, and hike into the backcountry to do some downhill skiing/boarding etc. Cross-country skiing is often bound to the trail.

That's my take. Disagree? Sound off in the comments ...

Gear Notes:

Pack

It holds 35 liters of gear, so plenty of room for snacks for the trail, an extra layer & fleece, hydration bladder and or water bottles, first aid kit, other miscellaneous gear, etc. Love the pack.

Snowshoes

TSL, Take the High Road 25" (The graphics on mine are a little different)

Powderridge, Women's 25"

The bindings on these are a bit weather than the TSL's, but they still hold up and do a great job. No complaints from my wife, she keeps up with me no problem. They are just not quite as aggressive as a design as the TSL Take the High Road 25's.

Poles

Tubbs, 2 Section Adjustable Snowshoe/Trekking Poles (Mine are red)

These work great. They are sturdy when at full length. They baskets cup the snow well. They are light weight, and the grip is comfortable. No complaints. Straight quality.

Boots

Columbia Bugaboot Omni-Tech (I've got them in brown)

I picked these up last fall as well. They are size 9, and slightly on the big side. They have a lip on the heel, perfect for snowshoeing. They are plenty warm and don't weigh very much. I wear them to work sometimes when the weather is bad.

Shades

Suncloud, Outlaw (discontinued, now called Surge)

I picked them up cheap on SierraTradingPost.com 3 years ago or so. Another good deal. No complaints. They are polarized (that's key). The fit well, keep the sun out, and look good. Period. Although, I think I left them in the car on a hot day one too many times, they are a bit warped (plastic frame). So they don't quite fit as well as they used to, my fault though.

Shell

Sherpa, Lobuste Soft-Shell Jacket (mine is an older version, this is the latest)

I picked this up last winter on Sierra Trading Post for dirt cheap (60% off at least). It has been great in most respects. The only complaint is the zippers. 2 of the 4 didn't have stoppers at the ends of the zipper track, so I would frequently zip the zipper right off the end into my hand (I fixed that with a little DIY tweak). Other than that, it is lightweight, wind resistant, water resistant, relatively warm, and a slim athletic fit. It is great by itself on a cool day, or as a cold weather layer. This is perfect as a shell for the kind of snowshoeing I do.

EMS, Techwick T3 Tights

I grabbed these on a retail sale when I used to live in Vermont a few years ago. They work out great for any cold weather activity. They can be worn by themselves for a run or snowshoeing (more activity), or as a layer in low activity or extremely cold conditions. Eastern Mountain Sports Techwick is the best.

Snowshoeing is so gnarly. Get outside!

I just started a fresh Moleskine notebook

I forgot to share these.

I love new beginnings. There are few things as satisfying as taking the shrink wrap off of a brand new Moleskine notebook, hearing the spine crack as you open it, and then smelling it. My staple Moleskine is the large squared notebook. It has the smaller line spacing so that I can write more on a page (I write small), plus the vertical lines give me the mental freedom to make sketches or any other doodles without stressing about 'messing up the page', etc.

This new notebook is the one that Moleskine sent me directly from Milan, Italy as a replacement for my last one that had some ink smudge defects on a few pages. It makes it just that much more special.

I hope you get one soon and start your new beginnings ...

This stuff looks about as sweet as I had hoped/expected, coming from Moleskine. I could definitely see myself splurging on these high-class unnecessary items, just because they are made by Moleskine.

My favorites after reading this post over at Scription are probably the Document Holder and the NoteCards/StickyNotes. But at $22 and $10 respectively, it does make one think twice.

It's neat how it incorporates a few of the different events + and element of danger, black & white style. Groovy.

Moleskine(R) | New Collections: Folio Professional and Folio Tools

Moleskine just announced 4 days ago their new collections. I haven't totally looked into it myself, but it looks pretty intense. I need to get over to a Barnes & Noble or some swanky stationary shop and check this sass out. Apparently they are scheduled to launch these new lines in April.

Hike 2-3 > Mountain Biking

Back in the fall I went mountain biking for the 2nd time over in Shindagin Hollow in Central New York state. It was stellar.

We have had a fair amount of rain at that time, and so our 2.5 hour ride through the woods was nice and muddy. It was really muddy actually. It was so much fun. Some of the "puddles" (more like small ponds) we rode through were 18" deep (aka you dunk your pedals and cranks). We were thoroughly spattered and tired by the end.
